RE:DAOS: Does DAOS compress (--> zip) the files stored in the file repository?

We are curious wether the files stored in the DAOS file repository are just plain copies of the files / attachments extracted from the NSF-files or wether the Domino server / DAOS task does compress the data in any way.

If the files are compressed, what is the average compression-rate that can be expected if you assume that the very most attachments are MS-Office documents?

And which compression technology is used?

A: Because Notes/Domino already manage attachment compression, DAOS itself does not compress data in any way.

The decision to compress data is made when you attach the data. From the client, when you attach a file you see something like this dialog box (Compress is the default)

If the Compress checkbox is on, the attachment will be compressed before it is sent to the server for storage. Depending on the database properties for this database this will either be Huffman compression or LZ1 compression. (interestingly, this discussion database uses Huffman)

Because Notes/Domino already manage compression, DAOS does not need to. DAOS will *encrypt* the data, but this does not affect the size of the stored data.

In general, we recommend that compressable attachments (doc's/spreadsheets) be compressed using LZ1 compression because it creates smaller images and uses less CPU than Huffman.
It is not unusual to see 30% savings, but this really depends on your data.

If you are attaching data that is already compressed (e.g. zip files) then you should not compress it because the "double compression" will not reduce the size.
